The pea is the green and round seed (most commonly green) of the Pisum sativum plant and is found enclosed in an elongated pod. Although it is considered a vegetable in the culinary world, botanists classify it as a fruit. Its exact origin is uncertain but it is predominantly found in southwest Asia, from where it is said to have been brought over to Europe. Peas are high in nutritional value as they are a source of protein, dietary fiber and vitamins.
